Sample Machinist

Sample machinists sew what are called samples which are prototypes of the designers product. The item could be a piece of clothing or an accessory.

Pattern Cutter

Pattern cutters create paper or computer-generated patterns from designers sketches. The pattern is used to cut the fabric pieces which are sewn together by machinists to create the garment.

Grader

Graders produce the different clothing sizes within a size range. Sample patterns are usually a size 10 or 12. Graders would then create the full size range e.g. from size 8 to 22, from the sample pattern.

CAD Technician

Computer aided design (CAD) technicians use computer software to design clothing, accessories, footwear, buildings, machinery, goods and components.

Illustrator

Illustrators produce drawings, paintings or diagrams for use in products such as books, greeting cards or on packaging.

Tailor

Tailors design and make one-off suits, jackets and coats for individual customers. They also repair and alter clothing.

Fashion Designer

Fashion designers design clothing, shoes or accessories for fashion brands and labels.

Fashion Design Assistant

Fashion assistants support designers with the creation of new and existing styles and patterns.

Web Designer

Web designers use their creative and technical skills to design new, and develop existing websites.

Graphic Designer

Graphic designers create visual branding, adverts, brochures, magazines, website design, product packaging and displays.

Footwear Designer

Footwear designers create new designs and sample patterns for men’s, women’s and children’s footwear.

Textile Designer

Textile designers create fabric designs for woven knitted and printed materials used for clothing, accessories and furnishings.

Interior Designer

Interior designers create concepts for building and room interiors. They usually source the products used manage projects from start to finish.

Furniture Designer / Maker

Furniture designers design and/or make furniture. They might also restore items.

Upholsterer

Upholsterers pad and cover (or re-cover) furniture with materials such as leather, suede or cotton.
