A Suitable Boy
A Suitable Boy is the BBC period drama adapted from the novel by author Vikram Seth. The six-part mini-series is set in newly independent 1950’s India - not only was the production filmed in India, it also has an all Indian cast.
The central theme follows feisty student Lata Mehra, played by Tanya Manikata, as her mum, Rupa Mehra, attempts to find her a husband. Rupa Mehra is played by Mahira Kakkar and Rasika Dugal plays Lata’s sister Savita Mehra Kapoor.
There’s also the love story between Maan Kapoor, played by Ishaan Khattar, and his older lover Saeeda Bai. Saeeda Bai is played by Tabassum Hashmi
The drama covers the ebbs and flows of family life over an 18-month period – there’s love, tragedy, religious differences, and friendships.
